Using sound as a tool for healing is not a new concept. In fact, many ancient cultures used sound as medicine. From Native American and Shamanic lineages to physicians in ancient Greece and the pharaohs of ancient Egypt, sound has long been recognized for its healing effects. Harnessed with different intentions, sound is used in a variety of ways from healing disease and changing negative habits to overcoming fears and expanding consciousness.
Sound healing works off of the notion that everything in existence is vibration. All matter, including our bodies, is made up of atoms vibrating at a certain frequency. Disease, stress, depression and other common conditions cause our bodies to vibrate at lower frequencies.
Could sound be the key to a high vibe life?
Through sound healing therapy we can naturally raise the vibration of our bodies to become more balanced and harmonious. The human body positively responds to sounds that will promote healing and bliss by allowing the DNA to repair itself.
Just think about the emotional state you’re in when you’re surrounded by loud abrupt noises, like a door slamming shut or a dog barking, what happens? Your blood pressure rises, your nervous system goes into fight or flight mode, and your body starts producing stress hormones. Compare that to the soothing sound of a lullaby or birds chirping outside of your window, tones that tend to relax both mind and body, release serotonin and melatonin, and promote feelings of peace and contentment.
An article on Kion expresses how sound and vibrations can elevate your life: “Words and sounds are much more than just a method of communication. They are tangible forces that have a direct effect on your health and wellbeing. The study of quantum physics shows that the human body and the entire universe is made up of tiny pieces of vibrating matter, hinged together by magnetic forces. Exposing the internal organs and brain to different musical frequencies will encourage the living matter in you to heal from within, to raise the frequency of your body and promote health, vitality and spiritual enhancement.”
Since everything in existence is vibration, we can’t limit the conversation to just music and sound healing instruments. What about words and thoughts? How you speak to yourself and others has a direct effect on the overall frequency that you emit.
How are you speaking to yourself and does it support the frequency you want to be vibrating at? Try working with a mantra for a week and see what shifts it initiates.
Now that we’ve covered the scientific aspects of sound, let’s get spiritual. Sound not only affects our physical and emotional bodies, it has profound impact on our electromagnetic field as well. In other words, sound influences our aura and our chakras. The chakra system is a map of spiraling energy centers throughout our body, each one pertaining to different parts of the physical, mental, and emotional bodies. Each chakra is therefore emitting and responding to vibration (sound, light, breath, etc.) in every moment. Unresolved trauma, stress, emotion, and disease can all throw off the balance of our chakras and therefore our energetic health. By listening to frequencies that are tuned to the natural vibration of the chakras, balance can be restored.
In my own personal experience attending sound baths and working one on one with sound healers, I have had profound shifts in my consciousness. Similar to a psychedelic trip, a sound journey can be a deeply transformative experience, taking you on a ride through different dimensions and leading you to have massive realizations, awakenings and integration.
One particular sound healer, David Kennet, helped me to reprogram some limiting subconscious beliefs that were holding me back from truly stepping into my authentic self. He works on the idea that the human electromagnetic field is essentially a computer; a device that contracts viruses and needs frequent software upgrades. Think of a limiting belief as a virus that needs to be cleared from your computer. Through the intentional use of sound these beliefs are quite literally reprogrammed.
You don’t have to attend a sound bath to reap the benefits of sound; its all around you! The same way you’d lay in the sun to soak up vitamin D, listening to the harmonies of nature can naturally improve your wellbeing. Some examples of healing sound therapy in nature are ocean waves, birds chirping, wind howling, and rain tricking down from the clouds.
Make a commitment to get outside in nature and soak up her sounds to help awaken your highest self.
