We’re big believers in creating dreamy goals and having a vision for your life. But setting goals when they’re not intentional and aren’t based on your values and who you want to be…. well, what’s the point?
If we don’t want to feel like hamsters on the never-ending hamster wheel, we need to craft our goals purposefully. Otherwise, we end up going nowhere and feeling empty. We’re trying to people-please, impress other people, or get validation by the results we achieve. And that’s not how we gain happiness.
You know it’s important to challenge yourself, and work toward something, but what should that something be? How do you find purpose and meaning in working to “achieve” something?
What does it look like to create a vision-aligned life? A life that makes you so excited to get out of bed in the morning? One that feels like you’re tapped into your life, fully present, fulfilled, energized, and crazy excited about?
That’s where our system of creating vision-aligned goals comes in.
What are Vision-Aligned Goals?
Vision-aligned goals are based on your values, who you want to be (your ideal self) and what you want your life to look and feel like.
So often, we choose goals that aren’t rooted in our ideal lifestyle. And more often than not, what keeps us stuck is our lack of knowing what we truly want for ourselves.
Here’s how to check-in.
Goals that aren’t vision-aligned unless you’ve defined what it means to you, beyond surface level:
- Making money (nothing wrong with making money, but you need more here.)
- Looking like you’ve got your sh*t together
- Chasing “success”
- Doing what everyone expects of you
What does money do for you? How do you define success?
Sometimes goal-setting can feel tedious or you find yourself creating goals for the sake of how impressive they seem or for the sake of challenging yourself.
So, I designed a process called Vision-Aligned Goals to break down goals in a way that feels fun, refreshing, and aligned with your values and vision for yourself.
- What do you want to make room for in your life?
- What do you want your life to look like and feel like?
- What are your true values?
- What do you want to be known for?
Our signature 4 types of vision-aligned goals help you to get clear on what you want.
Follow the prompts below to dig deeper into brainstorming goals that are purposeful, and can bring you a feeling of clarity in your pursuit to grow, learn, and challenge yourself.
1. Abundant Goals
Think in terms of what you want more of in your life. what is missing that you’re craving? dig into where you’re currently spending your currency aka time, money & energy, and if you had room for more – what would that look like?
This could be:
- More breaks in the day
- More playfulness
- More organized
- More challenges
- More fulfillment
- More freedom
Journal prompts:
- What do I want more of in my life? Time with family/balance/creativity/play/freedom/connection?
- What is currently missing that would bring more of those vibes into my life?
- What is missing that lights me up? What did I used to enjoy doing that I haven’t done much of lately?
2. Minimalist Goals
There are always things we’re trying to eliminate from our lives that aren’t productive, helpful or adding any value to our lives. and in order to make room for abundance, we have to let go of what isn’t serving us.
Anything in too much excess doesn’t feel balanced.
This could be:
- Eating unhealthy food
- Saying yes to too many things you don’t want to do
- Not seeing your family enough
- Scrolling Instagram mindlessly
- Online shopping
- Accumulating debt
Prompts:
- What can I eliminate to make room for more of what I want?
- What can I purge in order to create space for more purposeful actions? Think: where am i wasting my time, money, energy & resources
- What feels impossible to let go of, but I know in my heart that I should let it go?
- What have I considered letting go of (maybe because of what others think) but it truly brings me joy and it is essential to me?
3. Dreamy Goals
What do you dream is possible for you? It feels challenging, but not unimaginable. In these dreamy goals, you might not see the full picture of how you can reach them – but you feel like they were made for you. Dreamy goals fit the lifestyle you want for yourself, and you picture yourself doing them. These are heart-centered goals, based on your strengths and values. Check-in on your dreamy goals to make sure that by going after it, you’ll actually have the lifestyle you want – not just an impressive outcome.
For example, if family and time at home is a value for you – choosing a dreamy goal that requires you to travel every week likely doesn’t fall under a vision-aligned goal.
This could be:
- Creating a podcast
- Writing a book
- Running a marathon
- Backpacking across Europe
- Living on a farm – away from the big city
- Performing on stages
Prompts:
- What are my scary-but-doable goals? What can I create a plan to do right now?
- What feels possible within 3 years?
- What does this look like? What would my day-to-day look like?
4. Legacy Goals
We often forget about what we leave behind. What’s the legacy you’re creating for yourself? What do you want that goes beyond you and your time here? Create goals that represent the bigger mission you have in life – and what you want to leave behind. We don’t get to control our legacy entirely, but it’s important to consider the lasting impact we have on the world. How can we leave it better than we found it? How can we contribute to the future generations in a positive way?
This could be:
- Creating a business with a team (that can run without you!)
- Funding/volunteering with an organization that supports a cause you believe in
- Raising kind children
- Being remembered for the way you spread joy
- Making memorable art – movies, paintings, music, etc. with meaning… that can be shared for years to come.
- Reducing your carbon footprint
Prompts:
- Classic Miss Universe question: If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?
- What do you want to be known for?
- What hopes do you have for the next generation?
So today, I want you to get out your journal, and write down the following:
What do I want more of? (Abundant)
What do I want to get rid of? (Minimalist)
What are my heart-centered goals? (Dreamy)
What can you leave behind? What are the goals that go beyond yourself? (Legacy)
Use the prompts above to dig deeper into each of these areas. And tell us, what’s your legacy goal?
