Why Staying Grounded is Key to Mental Clarity

We all have a moment, for some more often than others, when we need to put ourselves in check. We get caught up in work, deadlines, making time for family, friends all while trying to squeeze in our hobbies, workouts, dates and so much more.

It’s like there aren’t enough hours in the day and soon concentrating becomes a task in itself. It leaves us feeling so disconnected from ourselves and in a mental rut.

Unfortunately, as much as I even hate to admit it, we aren’t superman. It is essential for us to take the time to ground ourselves for mental balance.  There are so many benefits to staying grounded and it’s so simple to do.

Go for a walk

I’m sure you’ve heard someone say, “I need some air” after a hard day or you describe a person you like as being “down-to earth.”  Well that all stems from the practice of being “grounded.” Being outside in nature is one of the key fundamentals of positive mental health. And while you’re outside, go for a run, bike ride, or sit by a tree.

These outdoor activities help silence the inner dialog in rattling in our minds. Less mental noise allows for inspirational thoughts to flow effortlessly and easily. Your level of awareness increases and so does your mood.

Meditate

10 minutes of silence will not harm you, I promise. Focus on your root chakra (the area at the bottom tip of your spine, near your hips).

The root chakra houses the connection we experience with our physical body and its nourishment.

As you meditate in silence, visualize a red in a circular ball of light in that area with roots from your spine connecting to the earth. Focus on all you have and all you’re grateful for even if its the job you less than love.

Sitting still too hard? Play some music and start dancing. Don’t worry about how funny you may look dancing in your bedroom alone in your PJs.

Focus on how you feel. A strong root chakra keeps us anchored in our body. After a good meditation session or dance off, you’ll have a feeling of harmony, balance and alignment.

Eat well

What put into our bodies is just a critical as what we do with our bodies. Adding in foods to your diet like carrots, potatoes, parsnips, radishes, onions and garlic, and anything that roots itself, can have a soothing effect on our mental state.

Because the root chakra is red, red foods provide the vibration needed for self-balance. Nutritionally, red foods usually have high levels of vitamin C. Some red foods you could try are tomatoes, strawberries, apples, pomegranates and cherries.

At the very minimum, take the time during your commute to work and/or home to decompress. Consider it sacred time you can use for yourself.
